Small interactions.
Big questions.

I’m Abby L. Manning, a PhD candidate exploring how cells bring the right transcription machinery together—at the right place and time.

How does a cell know
which machinery to use?

One question.
Multiple perspectives.

Transcription depends on proteins finding one another and working together with remarkable precision. I’m interested in the molecular interactions that recruit and coordinate these proteins across different classes of RNA genes.

In Eric Wagner’s lab, my doctoral research focuses on ICE2 and its connections to the cap-binding complex and Integrator in small nuclear RNA transcription. I combine biochemical and cellular approaches with structure-guided experiments to investigate how these interactions support function.

Looking aheadI’m interested in postdoctoral research that brings biochemical, structural, and functional approaches together, with a particular focus on developing hands-on expertise in cryo-EM. Anticipated PhD completion: May 2027.

Creativity takes more
than one form.

Outside the lab, I enjoy photography, collage, crochet, and imaginative worlds. Making things—and looking closely—is a thread that runs through both my science and my creative life.
